# Configuring the Lineaje MCP Server

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a standardized way for artificial intelligence systems to communicate with external tools and data sources, giving models a structured method to request information or perform actions. It creates a common interface that replaces one‑off integrations, allowing any compatible AI client to interact seamlessly with any MCP‑enabled service.

Connect to your IDE and configure the Lineaje MCP server so it can start [discovering your AI Assets](/unifai/ai-asset-inventory-ai-bom.md) and start [applying policies](/unifai/policies/viewing-and-enabling-policies.md).
